Though it took some time coming out, Microsoft’s enthusiastic dive into the mobile OS segment may have been just what was needed to spice up the mobile OS wars. LG has joined the procession of manufacturers who’ve announced handsets running Windows Phone 7. The Optimus 7 and Optimus 7Q will be the company’s first smartphones running the said mobile OS.

The devices seem to lay a heavy emphasis on the entertainment experience with features such as Play To DLNA-based multimedia sharing technology with user-friendly settings and the ScanSearch AR app that delivers real-time information on shopping, dining, weather and more. Content captured on the phones can be shared on a TV or over speakers without the tangle of wires.

Andy Lees, President of the Mobile Communications Business at Microsoft, commented, “We are very excited to be working with LG, a mobile phone industry innovator. Windows Phone 7 is designed to bring together what you care about most and LG is a key partner in making that experience a reality for people around the world.”

There’s LG’s voice-to-text function that allows users to update Twitter or Facebook, compose memos or e-mails without resorting to finger input. The Optimus 7 series handsets integrate 5MP cameras with 720p HD video recording, Intelligent Shot, Panoramic mode and capture as well as playback options in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Just as expected, they’re also coming with Microsoft’s Xbox Live and Zune services.

“We have designed LG Optimus 7 series to include a truly innovative sharing experience via the Windows Phone 7 environment,” explained Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics. “Having worked closely with Micro-soft to develop these fantastic devices, we are thrilled to now be able to reveal our vision of what a true Windows Phone 7 should be.”

The highlight is Microsoft’s new OS with the Start screen design through Live Tiles that extends simpler access to information and services on the web and preferred user apps. The six Hubs of the mobile OS include People, Games, Music + Video, Pictures, Marketplace and Office. The Optimus 7 has a 3.8 WVGA LCD, while the Optimus 7Q uses a 3.5” screen, with both displays offering 800 x 480p resolution visuals.

Each smartphone offers 16GB of onboard memory and runs on a 1500mAh removable battery which is apparently ‘good for hours of internet browsing, e-book reading or game playing. Or for simply talking.’ The 7Q version embeds an ergonomic QWERTY keyboard and features Microsoft Word Mobile, Microsoft PowerPoint Mobile, OneNote Mobile and Excel Mobile.

Both Windows Phone 7 devices are slated to be released across more than 35 nations, starting with Europe and Asia on October 21. The pricing details are foggy for now.

Mobile Phones
Those of you who own an Xperia X10 phone will be bashing your heads against a wall in frustration -- we recommend tying a pillow to your forehead -- as Sony Ericsson has announced it's delaying the Android 2.1 Eclair update yet again. It'll arrive in late October at the very earliest.

In a blog post, Sony Ericsson told furious Xperia X10,X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro owners that it had to postpone the start of the Android roll-out from the end of September, as it previously promised. The new plan is to start the Android 2.1 roll-out from the end of October.

But don't expect the update even then -- there'll be a phased roll-out that means different configurations of the phone get Eclair at different times.

In addition, anyone locked to a mobile network contract will have to wait even longer, as the update will need to be checked by the operators before pushed over the air to your handsets. So based on networks' previous tardiness with updates, it could be next year before you get 2.1, which even budget £99 phones are starting to come out with right now.

"We are of course not happy about the change of launch timing," said Sony Ericsson's Rikard Skogberg, "but we have had to spend some additional time on the software to really makes sure we roll out with the right quality and user experience."

As you might imagine, Xperia owners weren't particularly happy with Sony Ericsson for the delay of the upgrade. Many demanded that instead of 2.1, it should jump to Android 2.2. Eclair is already about a year old, with top phones such as the HTC Desire and Samsung Galaxy S already on or about to get 2.2.

The most important issue for many Xperia X10 owners is the broken promise. Some were annoyed by the slowness of the update, but were content to wait until this month. Now it's been even longer delayed, it wouldn't be a surprise if many angry Xperia owners moved to new phones from the likes of HTC and Nokia. We've had a bunch of long-suffering X10ers vent their feelings about the lack of Android upgrade, so is this the last straw? Comments welcome.

Back in April, LG unleashed the LG Optimus, claiming that it offers "Optimal performance for first-time smartphone users". What this means, essentially, is that the Optimus is on the lower-end of the smartphone market. Its software is engineered to be easy to use and the hardware is affordable. Well, now it has some new friends: The Optimus One and the Optimus Chic. The official announcement is set at 10am in Seoul and, while we don’t know too much just yet, these devices do look promising, especially for the lower-end market.

Really, we’ve only been able to nail down specs for the Optimus Chic:

  • 600Mhz processor
  • 5 MP camera (no word on autofocus yet, but it is probably a safe assumption)
  • A-GPS
  • Wifi (b/g)
  • 3.2" Display
  • Froyo
As for the Optimus One, the specs are assumed to be lower. Word on the street is that the camera has been bumped down to 3.2 MP, but we don’t really know for sure. Everything just seems to be rumors or conflicting information about the One. We’ll find out soon enough, though.

If you wade through LG's alphabet soup of upcoming Windows Phone 7 goodies, you might recall that several of them seem to be headed directly for AT&T later this year. Evidence for one of them in particular -- the C900 landscape slider -- just got a little stronger this evening on news that a phone by the very same model code has just been hooked up with FCC approval in the past few hours. Indeed, a quick look at the SAR report shows that we've got WCDMA bands II and V here, which means it'll work like a champ on AT&T; unfortunately LG is (and always has been) particularly awesome at making its ID label documents useless for identifying phones, so there isn't much other evidence to go on from this. Needless to say, though, we're convinced it's going to be a very interesting fourth quarter of the year for the Microsoft camp.

There’s only one problem: you don’t know when to show up. Now we might!

The eagle eyes over at PhoneArena were digging around the C900′s Bluetooth Certification page and found this little gem:

The supporting features related to BT of this models are like bellows; – RF : 2.1 + EDR – Profile : HSP, HFP, A2DP, AVRCP, PBAP This model will be available on Market around 2010-09-28 .

September 28th, you say? Why, that’s only a little over a month away. We’ll have to see just how far they plan to stretch the definition of “around” in “around 2010-09-28″ — but either way, Windows Phone 7 is coming soon.

The Nexus One is the first phone using Android 2.1, making the Google Nexus One phone a strong competitor against Apple iPhone 4 and the HTC Droid Incredible. The screen is an outpour of 16.7 million colors and the display is 800 x 480-pixel, good enough for you to browse photos and watch videos. A good news for movie lovers is that the Google Nexus One supports video playback duration of up to 7 hours, and music up to 20 hours. Well, I know that’s not our topic but… it is somewhat related to our concern: transferring video and music to Nexus One phone.

In order to transfer videos to Google Nexus One for playback, you need to make sure that the video (or audio) format is supported by the Nexus One. Let’s take a look at acceptable code by Nexus One:
Video codec: H.263, MPEG-4 SP, H.264 AVC
Audio codec: AAC LC/LTP, HE-AACv1 (AAC+), HE-AACv2 (enhanced AAC+), AMR-NB, AMR-WB 9, MP3, MIDI SMF, Ogg Vorbis, WAV

If your source video or audio file is encoded by above mentioned codec, please move on to the next step. Otherwise you need to convert the video or audio to supported format for Nexus One before transferring video to Nexus One.?

Detailed guide of transferring videos and music from PC to Nexus One: 1. Use the USB cable that came with your Nexus One to connect the phone to your PC, and you’ll receive a notification that the USB is connected.

2. Open the Notifications panel and touch USB connected. Then touch Turn on USB storage in the screen that opens to confirm that you want to transfer files. The Nexus One phone is connected as USB storage, and the screen will indicate that USB storage is in use and you receive a notification.

3. The SD card of Nexus One is mounted as a drive on your computer. You can now copy videos from PC to the SD card. During this time, you can't access the SD card from your Nexus One or share your phone's data connection with your computer via USB.

4. When the videos are copied to the SD card of Nexus One, you can disconnect your phone from PC. First unmount the SD card on your PC, then open the Notifications panel and touch Turn off USB storage.

Create Nexus One videos from movies, TV recordings, HD shootings, DVD videos, Flashes, etc: What if the video formats are not supported by Nexus One? Is there anyway to make Nexus One play movies, TV shows, Flashes and general videos that are not encoded in accepted codec? Surely there is. In the following guide I will show you a way enjoying videos of AVI, MOV, TiVo, FLV, MKV on Nexus One.The tool I use is Pavtube Video Converter. You may access a trial version of Video to Nexus One Converter and try it out.

Step 1. Load Videos to the Video to Nexus One Converter.
Install Video to Nexus One Converter and run the application. The interface is intuitive and easy to operate. Click on “Add” button to import source videos, or drag and drop videos to the program. This Video to Nexus One Converter is able to convert various video formats, such as TiVo, AVI, MP4, WMV, MPG, MKV, FLV, VOB, F4V, FLV, etc. To convert commercial DVDs to Nexus One, or rip blu-ray movie to Nexus One, you can have a try with Blu-Ray to Nexus One Converter.

Step 2. Select Nexus One as output format.
Click on the “Format” bar and there are various output formats for you to choose from. As we’re converting videos to Nexus One, you may follow “Android”-> “Google Nexus One MPEG-4 (*.mp4) format. This format gives video of 480*320, which looks fine on Nexus One. If you’d like to create Nexus One video of better quality, click on “Settings” and set File Size to 800*480, and bit rate to 1500/2000/2500.

Step 3. Start converting videos to Nexus One optimized video format.
Now click “Convert” button to start converting videos to customized Nexus One video. Wait till the conversion finished. Luckily the Video to Nexus One Converter is of high conversion speed and usually you do not have to wait long.

Step 4. Transfer videos to Nexus One.
After conversion completed, the video clips are ready to be transferred to Nexus One for playback. Refer to above how to transfer videos to Nexus One.

Extract music from video for playback with Nexus One? Convert video to Nexus One audio? It is very simple to extract sound track from videos. You can convert every video that loaded to the converter to Nexus One music.Simply select desired audio format in Step 2 (see the above guide). For example, you may follow “Common Video”-> “MP3 – MPEG Layer 3 Audio (*.mp3) or “AAC- Advanced Audio Coding (*.aac).

What if I just need partial of the track, not a full length? Well, here you are advised to use the Trim function in the Editor of Video to Nexus One Converter. Select the item you want to trim, click “Edit” button, then switch to “Trim” tab to set start and end time. Always trim the video before setting output format.

The picture above reveals that I cut the video length from 55 secs down to 30 secs. I then back to the main interface of Video to Nexus One Converter, set output format as MP3, and click “Convert”. Few seconds later, I get an MP3 file of 30 secs.

The Nexus One Converter- convert Nexus One shootings to Youtube, FaceBook, etc With the Google Nexus One, up to thirty minutes of video can be shot in a 720 x 480-pixel resolution, surely you can watch the videos on the smart phone, but when you feel like posting your shootings to Youtube,FaceBook, Viemo, etc, this powerful Pavtube Nexus One Converter also helps you to customize Nexus One shootings (H.263 or MPEG-4 encoded videos) to Youtube,FaceBook with proper formats, size, and duration. But maybe I would leave it in another guide, since that’s not today's topic.
