Recently, I have read a lot of data about cracking Apple TV, and achieved it finally with my Apple TV 2.3. Now I would like to share all of you my method.
Make video for Sony PSP portable video players with PSP video converter.
If you have an Apple TV 2.3, and do not want to waste too much time on converting on-hand DVDs or videos to MP4 format, this article may do you a favor with my own experience. By the way, because I am a PC user, so the following words are only for PC users:
1. Download atv-win-1.0.b11.zip from http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/downloads/list, and then decompress it.
2. Click the “Start” menu, and input cmd to “Run”, and then “enter”. Find out the folder you have decompressed, and run mk-atv-xbmc-ssh.bat.
3. After the bat file running has been completed, you will find that a few more files appeared in the folder you have decompressed just now. Then Plug in a USB disk, and then run “USB Image Tool” in the folder. If you are a vista user, remember to select “Run as administrator” by right click to run this file. (Note: Apple TV does not recognize all USB disk, you may have to try several)
Use a free Blu-ray Ripper software to ripping Blu-ray disc to PC, and then backup.
4. Choose "Device Mode” in the upper left corner of software interface, find your USB disk and select it, and then click “Restore” and select "atv-xbmc-ssh.img" in the pop-up window. A moment later, your cracking USB disc is done.
5. Plug the USB disk into your Apple TV, and at the same time press "menu" and "-" on the remote control for a few seconds until Apple TV restarting. 5 or 10 minutes later it will be displayed completed.
6. Cut off the power and remove USB disc, and then plug in the power to restart Apple TV.
Now the ssh service of your Apple TV has been opened. Then you need software PuTTy and WINscp. Both are free software, the download pages are
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html(PuTTy)
http://winscp.net/eng/download.php(WINscp)
Next, we will install nitoTV Take Two to let Apple TV support divx, rmvb and some other formats.
1. Download nitoTV Take Two from http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/NitoTV_Take_2, and decompress it. Open the folder and change the name of nitoTV Take Two folder to any names without spaces, “nito” is recommended.
2. Open WINscp, fill Host name with the IP address of your Apple TV, it can be find in the menu “Settings-General-About-IP Address”. Port number is 22, need not change. User name and Password are both frontrow. Choose SFTP when it comes to File protocol, and then login. After login, load the former “nito” folder to the root directory of Apple TV: directly drag it to the right-hand column in the open window.
3. Open PuTTy, Host Name is also the IP Address of Apple TV,
Connection type select SSH. The following is a scary-looking interface, do not be afraid, input username and password, both are frontrow, and then run the following command one by one:
cd nito
chmod +x installme
sudo ./installme
input the password again: frontrow
4. Installation complete. Power off and restart. And then install various plug-ins and software inside “nitoTV-Settings-Install Software” in the menu. Recommend at least install mplayer Codecs and Update Couch Surfer.
5. Use WINscp to upload movies to Apple TV for watching. It supports almost all video formats and plug-srt subtitles. MKV file sometimes can not be supported well for hardware reasons.
Next, select Update in Launcher menu. Click in to upgrade and install XBMC and Boxee.
Well, the most important steps have been completed, next make your own efforts to do further studies, because Apple TV really has great playability.
HD Video Converter can convert high definition video like AVI, MKV, AVCHD, H.264/AVC, MPEG-2/MPEG-4 TS, etc.
What’s more, if you think cracking Apple TV is too complicated for you, you can also get some specified software to convert your movies to MP4 directly. Some software I knew is recommended for you (only for PC users):
Rip DVDs:
Pavtube DVD Ripper
Convert videos:
Pavtube Video Converter
Pavtube HD Video Converter
